Lane Jail Levy Key Demographics

As one would expect with a money measure, the most important demographic distinction is by party: Democrats are more supportive than Republicans and Others. Of greater interest is the increasing Democratic support over time. That more frequently voting non-Democrats are more likely to have decided to  vote no is common since they are usually relatively better informed. Remember that “Don’t Knows” in Lane County-area money measures almost always vote no.

METHODOLOGY:

INTERVIEWS: 200 live telephone interviews of likely 2017 Lane County Special Election voters were conducted on each of December 12-14, 2016, April 24 and 25, 2017, and May 8 and 9, 2017. The margin of error at the sample median for each of the surveys is plus or minus 7%.

STATISTICS: CHAID (Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detection) was used to create the tree.

Lane Jail Levy-Opinion Strength Trend

Notable is the increasing strength of Yes opinion over time. The “Strongly Yes” increased dramatically between December and April and stayed high.

The Lane Jail Levy was far ahead throughout the campaign. Support was never below 60%.

May 2017 Special: The Siuslaw Turnout Bump

A previous post indicated that there was higher turnout in western Lane County than in the rest of the county. This diagram shows that most of that extra turnout came from the Siuslaw Port District.

This turnout bump was probably due to the very active campaigns concerning Bill Fleenor’s campaign for Siuslaw Port Commissioner.

2017 Jail Levy Increase Over 2013 by Eugene Ward

The greatest increases were among two of the south Eugene wards (1 and 2) and the northwest Eugene ward 6.

May Special Turnout by Eugene Ward

Ward 2, in the south hills, had the highest and Ward 3, around the University of Oregon, had the lowest turnout.

2017 Jail Levy Yes Pct. by City of Eugene Ward

All wards overwhelmingly supported the jail levy. The south Eugene wards (wards 1, 2 and 3) were the most supportive.

2017 Jail Levy Increase Over 2013 by Lane Commissioner District

All districts saw strong increases. The greatest were in the Eugene districts and the least was in the Springfield district.

2017 Jail Levy Increase on 2013 by Lane Region

All areas improved over 2017. Eugene, which was already the most supportive, increased by the most.
